Miller, King Statement on Obama Administration Decision to Limit Enforcement of Federal Immigration Laws
August 19, 2011 3:13 PM
Harrison Township, MI – Today, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, and Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement in response to the Obama Administration’s Thursday announcement that it would limit enforcement of federal immigration laws:
“This new non-enforcement policy announced by the Obama Administration is a blatant attempt to grant amnesty to potentially millions of illegal aliens in this country, and is totally unacceptable.
“In reality, this decision to vastly expand the exercise of ‘prosecutorial discretion’ in enforcing our federal immigration laws means that the Administration will now be, in a huge number of cases, simply ignoring those laws.
“The President and members of his Administration must enforce this nation’s laws, just as they have sworn in their oaths of office to do.
“On July 25th, in a speech to the National Council of La Raza, the President himself said, ‘I know some people want to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own…but that’s not how our system works…That’s not how our democracy functions. That’s not how our Constitution is written.’ Apparently the President’s understanding of how our system of government works has changed since last month.”
Previously, the Obama Administration decided it will no longer defend the federal law that says marriage can exist only between a man and a woman.
This Press Release, jointly released by Representatives Miller and King, is in response to actions taken by Obama’s administration, summarized by Stephen Dinan writing at The Washington Times.

Time Magazine predicted the Tea Party would soon break up like the Beatles,
but they were unable to predict who would be dating Yoko Ono.
Now Harry Reid is making a similar claim.
We’re pretty sure Harry Reid is wrong
and the New York Times is right: “No One wants to date Yoko.”

Taxed Enough Already
TEA Party members get a mixed bag of wins/losses from Congress, as it sends the Tax Cut Bill to Obama’s desk for signing on Friday, December 17th. Though the bill contains a two year extension of “The Bush Tax Cuts”, Obama negotiated additional spending of $858 billion within the legislation. Click the image above to read more.

U.S. Senate blocks DREAM Act,
passes repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
In a Saturday session a week before Christmas, the U.S. Senate voted failed to overcome a procedural vote to move the DREAM Act forward.
The Senate shot down the DREAM Act motion on a 55-41 vote. The U.S. Senate did invoke cloture for the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the law which prohibits openly gay or lesbian citizens from serving in the U.S. military. The legislation went on to pass the full Senate late on Saturday afternoon.

THE DREAM ACT?
by Jay Corey
This is just wrong. It is wrong on so many levels. The Dream Act purports to be a compassionate process to offer citizenship to “children” (up to age 35!) of illegal immigrants. The path to forgiveness runs through higher education and/or military service. On the surface it sounds compassionate, but don’t be deceived. It is nothing more than another attempt to sneak in amnesty for millions of people who have committed breaking and entering on a grand scale. It is literally no different than telling you that you have to provide shelter, healthcare, and education to vagabonds who camp out in your backyard without invitation.
It is wrong because it grants in-state tuition rates to non-citizens that are not available to U.S. citizens.
It is wrong because it will allow those who enter the program to bring in family members to the amnesty program. This is the backdoor to full amnesty.
It is wrong because it is about giving amnesty to people who have broken our laws. They have consciously, and with premeditation, violated the laws of our land. This country was founded on principles of self-determination by people who took responsibility for their actions. They established the rule of law and rightfully expected everyone to live by it. If citizens followed the law of the land, they could reap the benefits of hard work and risk-taking. We who honor those laws and play by the rules are being asked to not only look the other way when criminals ignore our laws, but we are also being asked to reward them with the fruits of our labors. What lessons do we teach our children (and the world) when we reject the principle of personal responsibility and ignore our own laws?
It is wrong because, quite simply, we cannot afford it financially. The Center for Immigration Studies, an independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization, states that “on average, each illegal immigrant who attends a public institution will receive a tuition subsidy from taxpayers of nearly $6,000 for each year he or she attends for a total cost of $6.2 billion a year, not including other forms of financial assistance that they may also receive.”
It is wrong because it dishonors our ancestors. This country cannot afford to throw away the sovereignty for which our families and forefathers fought and died. We, as a nation, willingly spilled untold gallons of our precious blood to preserve our nation for our children, not someone else’s.
It is wrong because polls speak loudly and clearly that the majority of American citizens do not want amnesty. Even during the Bush administration when John McCain and Bush tried to push through a comprehensive immigration bill in 2007, the American people voiced strong opposition and defeated that attempt. Since then, our voices have become louder and stronger, yet those who dislike America persist in their efforts to dismantle its institutions, traditions, and laws.
It is wrong because it addresses an effect, but not the cause. It does nothing to stop the flood across our borders. It only legitimizes those who have flagrantly disregarded our laws.
It is wrong because it enables a weak Mexican government, which demonstrates an inability to stem the lawlessness of its border towns, as it initiates a lawsuit against the state of Arizona for enacting tough and fair immigration laws.
It is wrong because the whole problem of illegal immigration is tied closely to the flow of drugs across our borders. Many of the illegals are used as mules who carry bales of narcotics on their backs as they emerge from tunnels and breaches in our border.
It is time to speak up again. We in Michigan have an opportunity to apply pressure to one of our Washington senators. Debbie Stabenow is up for re-election in 2012. She will be paying attention to the voices of those who will cast votes and decide her fate. If pressure is not applied, it will be business as usual. We must contact her repeatedly through every means possible. Below is a link to her Senate email. Listed also is her Washington office phone number and her local contact information. Make it a habit to contact her repeatedly. Let her know that her support of the Dream Act may be one of her last acts. She must know that we feel it is just wrong!

Don’t forget Senator Levin and your local congressman.
If you have been paying attention to recent Fox News broadcasts about George Soros, you already know this. For those of you who haven’t, now is the time to pay attention.
According to Fox, whose staff has done considerable research on this topic, the extreme left elements of our society are out to create a pressure-cooker environment for America. As you know, a pressure cooker works by placing a secure lid on a pot and raising the heat to cook food in a rapid manner. Van Jones, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, has stated that the American people have put the lid on society by electing an extreme left government. Now their intention is to raise the heat by engaging a variety of special interest groups to create discontent within our society: special interests like illegal aliens, gay activists, the poor, abortion advocates , etc… Another ingredient is the economy. They are weakening the value of our currency and creating instability and uncertainty. They have locked up all the money available for loans by paying banks to hold onto it instead of assuming risk by lending it out. Another way they have created agitation among Americans is their violation of Fourth Amendment guarantees against unreasonable search and seizures at airports. Make no mistake about it, this is all part of a grand scheme to raise the temperature of the American temperament. And it is only beginning. Inflation will heat things up considerably. Their ability to create mischief and discontent is boundless, so expect their activities to ramp up.
The fact that the American people have sent a clear message to Washington indicating they want a change in direction will have no bearing on the left’s plans, other than to accelerate them. One would like to take heart from Democratic strategists who are trying to advise the Obama administration that the people have spoken, and it is time to change direction to the center. Unfortunately, their premise is incorrect. They are operating under the assumption that this administration and the so-called leadership in Congress is operating like typical political animals. That is, they will do anything to stay in office. This is where I believe the centrist Democratic strategists are wrong. These left wing partisians are on a mission to dismantle the American economy and to create enough chaos so that we will cry “uncle” and beg Washington to make it stop.
As previously stated, the lid is on the pressure cooker, and the heat is being turned up. Just as the Obama administration had no qualms about throwing members of their own party under the bus to further their agenda, they will find that the powers beyond Washington will have no qualms about using Obama and his cronies and then throwing them to the wolves when the time comes.
As patriotic citizens, we must educate ourselves and maintain our resolve. We must resist the temptation to react with anger thereby unwittingly taking part in turning up the heat ourselves. Our focus must be on keeping cool and working to remove the lid.
We live in interesting times.

Romeo Area Tea Party
RATP was honored to host guest speaker Phyllis Schlafly at special July 23, 2010 meeting.
Nearly 500 people came to watch Phyllis Schlafly talk with the RATP group.
Romeo Area Tea Party has invited Phyllis Schlafly to speak
at our Friday, July 23 Meeting.
Counting down 14 days until her visit, we will feature something new each day.
Day 3 2
I Like…
…Phyllis’ stance on Illegal Immigration, based on Rule of Law.
She supports American identity, which includes in part,
… immediate border security to stop the entry of illegal aliens, illegal drugs, women seeking to give birth to “anchor babies,” Third World diseases, criminal gangs, and potential terrorists. We oppose all variations of amnesty and guest-worker visas. Our first task is to assimilate the millions of non-English-speaking foreignborn who are legal residents.”
Phyllis discusses many of these topics in her columns, and is even-handed in her criticism of government policies, whether during the Bush administration here, here and here, or during a Democratic administration, here and here.
We are honored to have Phyllis as our featured speaker on Friday, July 23rd, 2010 at 7 PM

Reporting on the Democrat majority push for Illegal Immigration reform that would include amnesty, and alternate plans if legislation is unsuccessful.
Article from Fox, posted Thursday June 24 on NumbersUSA, summarized below by Mark Majoros:
- Numbers USA, an organization that presses for lower immigration levels along with humanitarian treatment of illegal immigrants
- Numbers USA has been involved in a nationwide story of the Obama Administration’s possible plans to offer an amnesty through the use of executive actions.
- Numbers USA has started a petition to the president expressing “outrage” at the alleged plan.
- Rosemary Jenks, director of government relations with Numbers USA, said she’s been hearing for weeks from “sources close to the Democratic leadership” in both chambers that administration officials are discussing whether the Department of Homeland Security could direct staff to grant “amnesty” for all illegal immigrants in the country. “They’re trying to figure out ways around a vote,” she said.

The following is a summary of an Article detailing a Letter sent to Pres. Obama from 8 Senators, posted Wednesday, June 23 on NumbersUSA:
- A possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation’s 11-18 million illegal aliens.
- Eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can’t secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate.
- The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens.
- Executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis
- If 60 votes can’t be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.

Article posted at Fox.com addresses “Will Administration Bypass Congress on Immigration Issue?” and is summarized below by Mark Majoros :
- The Obama administration has been holding behind-the-scenes talks to determine whether the Department of Homeland Security can unilaterally grant legal status on a mass basis to illegal immigrants, a former Bush administration official who spoke with at least three people involved in those talks told FoxNews.com.
- The White House would not confirm or deny the claim. It’s unclear what section of the illegal immigrant population such a move would target. But the former Bush official said the discussions are real. “The administration at the very minimum is studying legal ways to legalize people without having to go through any congressional debate about it,” the source said
- The former official said it’s unclear what specific avenues the administration is considering, but that one potentially feasible option would be to use either deferred action or parole to legalize at once the millions of immigrants who have overstayed their visas — not necessarily those who crossed the border illegally.
- The Department of Homeland Security estimated last year that 10.8 million undocumented residents live in the United States — the Pew Hispanic Center, which has a similar count, estimated in 2006 that at least 4 million of them overstayed their visas.
- Deferred action and parole would give illegal immigrants the ability to seek a work permit and temporary legal status.
- Those two tools are usually used on a case-by-case basis. The former official said any move to broaden that authority and use it on a mass basis would be “woefully inappropriate,” though politically brilliant.
- The recently signed immigration law in Arizona has divided the country, with some states trying to replicate the state’s tough legislation and other jurisdictions boycotting the state in protest. The Obama administration plans to file a court challenge.
- Democrats, meanwhile, have been trying to round up support for an overhaul bill in Congress.

This is a difficult post to write, the subject matter is grisly to say the least. But after listening to the recent firestorm of protest over the new Arizona immigration law, it is obvious that a lot of people are not really looking at all sides of the story squarely. It’s always easy to get caught up in emotion, but it’s difficult to think through all of the ramifications of our ideas and decisions to come to a more reasoned solution.
The Arizona border situation is a complete mess. Simply take a look at this poor person in the picture. They tried to walk across the Arizona desert and this is what can happen when you are ill prepared for what can only be described as a desert marathon. And what happened to the ‘coyotes’ to whom this person paid hard earned cash for their help and guidance across this difficult landscape? Nowhere to be found.
The victims of the federal government’s lack of interest in securing our borders include many like this person. They die trying to cross. This is a human tragedy. Obviously, the United States cannot simply open our borders completely and let everyone who wants to come enter. We are no longer the pre-industrial revolution country in need of millions of new immigrants to build the country from the ground up. We are now a post industrial society where education is critically important to success.
Yes, there are still jobs for new immigrants from the under developed world, but not nearly as many as there once were. Illegal immigration makes climbing the income ladder extremely difficult for those who are here and trying to work their way up the ladder. We still need immigrants, but they should come legally, in a measured stream, with some controls in place. What’s a shame is that illegal immigration has now given legal immigration itself a bad rap, a rap that’s not necessary. America can still prosper and grow with the help of new immigrants, as it always has, but we cannot continue to serve them, and ourselves, so poorly as this person was served.
Americans are a compassionate people, which is one reason why they support the new Arizona Law so broadly. So why does the political class have such a problem trying to understand this issue. The simple and I believe correct answer is that they are not trying to resolve the illegal immigration issue at all. They are manuevering for votes. This is why there is such a huge gulf between the citizens and our elected officials. We see the issue as the issue, they see the issue as political strategy.
My grandparents, all 4 of them, were immigrants to this country. They came legally, some through the famous Ellis Island. On a visit to New York a few years ago, I had a chance to see what they saw when they first set foot in America. It was an emotional experience. And like the poor person in the photo above, they came from an impoverished land, where they had little hope of a better life and less hope for freedom. They also came here legally. But the country needed lots of immigrants back then, and they helped to build the country we are today. Today, we need a new solution to the immigration issue, one that respects the human tragedy that can result when we do not make our border secure, and one that understands the economic realities of life in modern America. C’mon, politicos, take a close look and tell me that we can’t do better than this!
If you want more information about the illegal immigration and the suffering it causes, you can start with some facts at good old wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigrant_deaths_along_the_U.S.-Mexico_border. In 2000, the number of people who died soared to over 500, and these are only the ones we know about.
